International Women’s Day 2026: GPI Calls for Greater Investment in Girls, Women
Girls’ Power Initiative (GPI) has called for increased investment in the empowerment of girls and women as the world commemorates the 2026 International Women’s Day. In a press statement issued on Saturday in Benin City and signed by Mabel Ikoghode Ekido, Coordinator, Edo State Center, the organisation said this year’s theme, “Give To Gain,” highlights the importance of supporting girls and women as a pathway to building stronger families, communities, and nations. According to the statement, investing in girls’ education, health, leadership opportunities, and economic empowerment creates positive ripple effects that benefit society at large. The statement noted that for decades GPI has remained committed to empowering adolescent girls with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to make informed decisions about their lives. GPI said its programmes focus on areas such as comprehensive sexuality education, leadership development, mentorship, and community engagement aimed at building a generation of empowered girls capable of contributing meaningfully to society. Despite progress made over the years, the organisation observed that many girls still face significant challenges, including limited access to education, gender-based violence, harmful traditional practices, and restricted participation in decision-making processes. It stressed that overcoming these barriers requires collective action from governments, development partners, communities, and individuals.“The theme ‘Give To Gain’ reminds us that when we invest in girls and women, societies become more prosperous and inclusive,” the statement said. The organisation therefore called on stakeholders to increase investment in girls’ education and leadership development, promote policies that protect the rights and dignity of women and girls, and challenge harmful social norms that limit girls’ potential. GPI also urged communities to create safe spaces where girls can learn and grow, while supporting initiatives that equip them with life skills and opportunities for economic empowerment. The statement reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to building a society where every girl is valued, respected, and empowered to reach her full potential.
“When we give girls and women the tools to succeed today, we gain a more equitable and prosperous future for all,” the organisation added.
