2026 IWD: GPI Sensitises Market Women on Self-Care, Mental Wellbeing in Edo
As part of activities marking the 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD), Girls’ Power Initiative (GPI), Edo State Center conducted a market sensitization programme on self-care and mental wellbeing for women traders in Edo State. The outreach forms part of GPI’s ongoing efforts through the Women Workers Forum project, with support from Global Alliance Against Trafficking in Women (GAATW), to promote awareness on women’s health, wellbeing, and empowerment within communities. The sensitization, held on March 13, 2026, took place at Ugbiyiokho Market in Ugbiyokho community, Egor Local Government Area, where facilitators engaged women traders and workers on the importance of prioritising their wellbeing while managing family responsibilities and business activities. During the session, participants were encouraged to pay attention to their mental and physical health, with facilitators emphasising that self-care is essential for maintaining productivity, sustaining livelihoods, and supporting their families.
The activity was carried out through direct engagement within the market environment, as the team moved around the market speaking with women in small groups. Facilitators shared key messages on the importance of self-care and mental wellbeing, using interactive discussions and practical examples relevant to the daily lives of women traders.
Participants were also encouraged to reflect on simple ways they could incorporate self-care practices into their daily routines despite the demands of running businesses and caring for their families.
The sensitization further provided an opportunity for the women to ask questions, share personal experiences, and discuss common challenges affecting their wellbeing.
The outreach forms part of GPI’s ongoing efforts through the Women Workers Forum project to promote awareness on women’s health, wellbeing, and empowerment within communities.
