2026 IWD: GPI Advocates Self-Care, Economic Empowerment for Women
Girls’ Power Initiative (GPI), Abuja Liaison Office, as part of the Women Workers (WWF) Project, commemorated the 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD) with women of ECWA 1 Hausa Church, Kubwa, Abuja, engaging them in discussions on self-care, empowerment, and economic opportunities. The event, organised as part of activities marking the global celebration of women, focused on this year’s theme, “Give to Gain.” Participants were encouraged to prioritise their well-being while supporting one another in building stronger families and communities.
Speaking during the engagement, Ebele Akintayo introduced the WWF project and its objectives, explaining that the initiative, funded by Global Alliance Against Trafficking in Women (GAATW), is designed to empower women through awareness, leadership development, and capacity-building, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to their families and communities. She noted that the church was selected as part of the project’s effort to reach women at the grassroots and promote collective learning and support.
Patience Imomoh, a WWF participant, led discussions on the importance of self-care and its role in enhancing women’s health, productivity, and overall quality of life. She emphasised that caring for oneself enables women to give more effectively to their families and society.
Also speaking, Njideka Okwueze, another WWF participant, addressed the theme “Give to Gain,” highlighting the importance of feminism and encouraging women to aspire to leadership positions. She cited Queen Esther in the Bible and renowned Nigerian potter Ladi Kwali as examples of women who made remarkable impact despite societal barriers.
Okwueze urged the women to be outspoken and to resist pressures that attempt to silence their voices.
The programme also featured a guest speaker, Eunice Odeghe, President of the Female Drivers Association (FEDAN), who enlightened participants on the economic benefits of driving as a viable means of livelihood. She explained that women could generate income through professional driving and encouraged them to explore the opportunity as a pathway to financial independence.
Odeghe also shared emergency hotlines for medical support within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), advising participants on how to access help during road accidents or emergencies occurring in their homes. The emergency numbers provided were 09157892931 and 09157892932 (FCT only).
The women of ECWA 1 Hausa Church warmly welcomed the GPI team and participants, expressing appreciation for the insightful discussions and practical information shared during the event.
In appreciation of the outreach, the women in the church extended a special invitation to the GPI team to attend their upcoming Mother’s Day celebration scheduled for next week.
The engagement formed part of GPI’s ongoing commitment to empowering women and girls through education, awareness, and capacity-building initiatives across communities.
