PACKING Project: The Success Story

PACKING stands for Protection of migrants and Asylum seekers especially women and Children coming from Nigeria and victims of trafficKING.

The project implemented by Ecpat France, INFRA, (Ibadan) Mercy Wings (Libya) and Girls’ Power Initiative (GPI) (Benin) commenced in January 2017 in the five local government areas (LGAs) of Edo Central Senatorial District.

The goal of the project is to create awareness on the ills of trafficking in persons, irregular migration and reduce the vulnerability of children to being trafficked by sensitizing them and building their skills to say No to Traffickers.

Activities carried out include Market campaign to major markets in the five LGAs of Edo Central Senatorial district,  town hall meetings with community gatekeepers, opinion leaders, community members, town hall meeting with transporters, motor park campaign to major motor parks,  7 weeks peer education activity in 15 schools, sensitization of 100 students and a teacher each from 71 schools using film screening on human trafficking, irregular migration, identification and enrollment of 142 vulnerable students and their household, Economic strengthening of 50 students and their caregivers and support of 10 young women who returned from Libya in opening of business, radio programs, and inter-school debate competition.

The strategy used include formation of project management committee meeting from stakeholders who met quarterly, periodic meeting of project implementation team members, advocacy visits to various stakeholders and capacity building workshops.

The target set was surpassed and the project was successfully implemented with the cooperation of all and sundry.
