GPI organizes Cake Making and Icing workshop By Maria Obazuwa
A two-day workshop on cake making and icing was held on 30th April to 1st May 2009 in which thirteen (13) GPI girls from the GPI Saturday Centre meeting, Benin participated. This was held at the GPI Multi-Purpose Hall, Benin City.
Of the 13 girls that took part, two of them were from year three (Oasis) class, while seven were from year two (Roses) class and four from year One class. They were between the ages ten to eighteen years of age.
The two-day workshop had the girls baking cake, on the first day after they were taught the theory of different methods of mixing cake. The second day saw the girls go through the theory of icing cakes for specific occasions after which the girls were divided into three groups to practice the three types of icing they were trained on, namely butter, glace and royal icing. The girls availed themselves to use the several decorating sets/items to depict the occasion for which the cake was baked/iced.
During the evaluation and interactive session of workshop, ten year old Peace Ogbemudia of Silver (year one) calss described icing as “…a sugared and coloured or white paint on a cake” while fourteen year old Peace Omobude of Roses (year two) class said “My mum said I will be the one to bake my senior brother’s birthday cake in June this year”.
